Collection: Primer & Clearcoat

The primer in a powder coating serves as an adhesion base for the powder-coated layer. It improves the adhesion of the powder coating to the substrate and increases corrosion resistance. The primer can also pre-treat the substrate to enable an even surface coating. Clear coats form a protective and sealing layer and are used to protect the object from damage, wear, and corrosion.

OUR PRIMERS & CLEARCOATS

Primers and clear coats in powder coating

Powder coating is a widely used technique for surface finishing of metal and plastic parts. It offers high resistance to corrosion, chemicals, and mechanical stress. Two essential components in this process are primers and clear coats. Both play a crucial role in ensuring the functionality and aesthetics of the coated objects.

Powder coating primer

There are different types of primers suitable for different requirements and substrates. Some commonly used primers are:

  • Epoxy primers
  • Polyester/epoxy mixed powder primers
  • additional zinc phosphate primers and phosphate primers

Choosing the right primer depends on factors such as the substrate material, environmental conditions and the desired surface coating.

Purpose of use

Primers serve as the first layer on the substrate in powder coating. Their main functions are:

  1. Adhesion promoters : They ensure better adhesion of the subsequent powder coating to the substrate.
  2. Corrosion protection : Primers provide basic protection against corrosion, especially on metallic substrates.
  3. Leveling of surface irregularities : They help to level out small bumps and porosities in the substrate, allowing for a smoother final coating.

Powder coating clear coats (colorless/transparent)

Clearcoats are typically made from polyurethane, epoxy resins, or acrylic resins. The type of clearcoat depends on the specific surface coating requirements, such as durability, UV resistance, and scratch resistance. The clearcoat in powder coating serves as a protective layer and can also enhance gloss and color intensity. A good clearcoat layer can also ensure longer life and better weather resistance. The selection of the clearcoat formulation depends on the application and part requirements, including requirements for surface finish, durability, and resistance to chemicals and weathering.
