Collection: Primer

If the parts to be coated are intended for outdoor use , we generally recommend applying a primer coat before applying the top coat of paint . This is especially useful for corrosion protection. We offer primers in pure epoxy and polyester/epoxy blends in various colors.

Important information before using the primer

When painting, surface preparation before priming is a crucial step to achieve a high-quality and long-lasting finish. Here are some useful tips to keep in mind:

  1. Cleaning the surface : Ensure the surface you plan to paint is free of dirt, dust, grease, oil, and other contaminants. Use appropriate cleaning agents and techniques appropriate for the material you're working on.

  2. Sanding : Sanding the surface creates a rough texture, which allows for better adhesion of the primer. Use sandpaper with the correct grit for your project. A grit that's too coarse can damage the surface, while a grit that's too fine may not provide enough adhesion. Often, you start with a medium grit and work your way up to finer grits.

  3. Dust removal : After sanding, it's important to thoroughly remove all dust particles. You can use a soft brush, a microfiber cloth, or compressed air to do this. Otherwise, dust residue can cause unevenness in the surface.

  4. Degreasing : After removing the dust, you should degrease the surface. This can be done with a special degreaser or with mild soapy water. Make sure the surface is completely dry before proceeding.

  5. Masking : Protect areas that won't be painted with painter's tape or special masking tape. This ensures clean edges and prevents paint or primer from transferring to unwanted parts of the surface.

  6. Compatibility check : Make sure all materials you use (cleaner, sandpaper, primer, paint) are compatible with each other and with the surface. Some materials react poorly with each other or are unsuitable for certain surfaces.

  7. Appropriate conditions : Pay attention to the ambient conditions. High humidity, dust, or extreme temperatures can affect the results. Ideally, painting should be carried out in a well-ventilated, dust-free room at moderate temperatures.

  8. Safety precautions : Use personal protective equipment such as gloves, safety goggles and, if necessary, a respirator, especially when working with chemical cleaning agents, sanding dust or potentially harmful fumes.

  9. Test Coating : It may be helpful to perform a test coat on a small, invisible area or a scrap piece of material to check the adhesion and appearance of the primer and paint.

By following these tips, you can create a solid base for priming and subsequent paint application, resulting in a professional and lasting finish.   Further information can be found in the technical data sheets.
